BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The high-power attack of the No. 10 Louisville Cardinals was too much for the Virginia Tech lacrosse team as it fell 15-6 at Thompson Field Saturday afternoon. The Hokies allowed Louisville to jump out to an early lead and were unable to recover. Jessi Thon and Gracee Hendrix led Tech with two goals apiece, while Faye Brust led the Cardinals with four goals.

Louisville (7-2, 1-2 ACC) got out to a 4-0 lead in the first four minutes of play. Kaylin Morissette scored back-to-back goals in less than a minute to keep the momentum in the Cardinals’ favor. Iinside 20 minutes to play in the first half, the Hokies seemed to earn an opportunity when a Brust goal was called back and she was issued a yellow card on the play, but she quickly earned it back as she sprinted into the Cardinals offensive end once her penalty time was up and was found by Morissette for the goal.

The Hokies (5-6, 0-3 ACC) were able to get on the board when Meg Bartley took a handoff from Cawley Bromley near the goal on the left side and cut across the middle for the score. Bromley was again the orchestrator just over two minutes later when she found Megan Will from behind the cage with 6:12 until the break.

Hendrix seemed to end the half on a high note for the Hokies when she added a free position goal with 1:25 on the clock, but Louisville was able to tack on one more in the final minute to take an 8-3 lead into the half.

The Cardinals dominated possession the first half, outshooting Tech 18-8. Morissette also helped Louisville control the draw as the Hokies were able to win just one of the 12 opportunities.

It was much of the same in the second half. This time the Cardinals strung together five goals in the opening ten minutes. Hendrix added another 8-meter goal for Tech, and Thon tried to spark the Hokies late with two goals in the final three minutes of action, but the distance was too much to overcome in such little time.

Morissette and Hannah Koloski added three goals each for the Cardinals, who outshot Tech 30-16 in the game. Morissette also helped Louisville take the 20-3 draws edge, winning 12 in the game.

Meagh Graham made the start in cage for the Hokies and received the decision, allowing 11 goals and making three saves in 33 minutes of action. Hannah Sieger saw the remaining 27 minutes in goal, allowing four goals and making two saves. Ashley Peacock earned the win for Louisville and finished with four saves.

Tech will return to action next week, remaining at home to host North Carolina Wednesday March 25 at 4 p.m.
