NOTRE DAME, Ind. – A slow second half for the Virginia Tech lacrosse team was the deciding factor as the Hokies fell at No. 17 Notre Dame, 15-8, Saturday afternoon. Megan Will led the Tech offense with two goals and an assist. Cortney Fortunato set a school record as she paced Notre Dame with eight goals.

After a balanced first half from both teams, Notre Dame (4-4, 1-2 ACC) pulled away in the second. To start the game, the Hokies (5-5, 0-2 ACC) were able to work back from being down 3-0 early in the game as Megan Will got things started for Tech. Both teams traded goals until Will struck for a second time to spark the Hokies.

Meghan Macera intercepted Notre Dame’s clear attempt just as it was leaving the Irish’s defensive zone, and sent it straight to Cawley Bromley, who quickly relayed it to Will in front of the cage for the score.

Meg Bartley added a free position goal for Tech and Colleen Ward buried a pass from Jessi Thon with 1:30 left in the first half to give the Hokies their first lead of the day. Notre Dame was able to tie it up before the halftime buzzer to make it seven-all.

Notre Dame opened the second half with a pair of goals in the opening seven minutes to create some distance. Gracee Hendrix responded for Tech to keep things close, but the Irish steadily pushed for the remainder of the game. The Irish strung together six straight goals to close out the game and seal the victory.

After taking the shooting edge, 13-12, into the halftime break, the Hokies took just five shots in the second half, while Notre Dame tallied 13.

Meagh Graham made the start in cage for the Hokies. She made two saves and allowed nine goals before she was replaced with 21:40 left in the game by Hannah Sieger. Sieger had three stops and allowed six goals. Liz O’Sullivan earned the win for the Irish and made four saves in the game.

The Hokies will have a little time off before returning to action on Saturday, March 21. They will continue conference play hosting Louisville at 1 p.m.
