ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Seniors Meg Bartley and Megan Will were the late heroes as the Virginia Tech lacrosse team defeated Michigan 13-12 in overtime at Michigan Stadium Wednesday night. Will forced overtime in the final seconds of regulation, and Bartley decided the game as the pair paced the Hokies with four goals apiece. Michigan saw three players score three goals.

Tech (5-4) trailed early in the game but worked its way back to take a 7-6 lead into the halftime break. The Hokies scored six straight goals to close the half and Bartley put Tech ahead with 15.2 seconds left for the team’s first lead of the game.

The second half saw much more even play, as Michigan (3-3) regained the lead early, but play went back-and-forth for the remainder of regulation. Neither team ever saw a lead larger than two goals for the rest of the game.

Michigan tied things up at 11 with 11:13 left to play after scoring back-to-back goals and Tech called a timeout following the second score. After a seven-minute lull in scoring by both teams Colleen Ward struck for Tech, but the goal was called back due to an illegal stick with 4:20 remaining.

With things still tied at 11, Michigan capitalized on the opportunity when Anna Scheuler scored her third goal of the game with 3:31 to play to give the Wolverines the 12-11 lead.

As the seconds ticked down on the clock, Will would not let the Hokies go down. She attacked from the left side and sailed a shot into the upper right corner of the goal to tie the game for a final time with 26.6 on the clock.

Neither team was able to break the tie by the end of regulation and the game went to overtime. Michigan’s Jess Angerman scored in the first overtime session, but yet another goal was called back, this time due to a crease violation and the Hokies were still alive.

To begin the second session of the first overtime, Bartley won the opening draw to take sole possession of the all-time drawl controls record at Tech. She finished the game with six.

It seemed as though it would take a second overtime to decide the game when the Hokies turned the ball over with under a minute to play, but Meghan Macera, who had been huge for the Hokies all night, got it back for Tech and sent it back down the field. The ball was relayed to Cawley Bromley who passed it in front of the goal to a wide-open Bartley, who buried the game-winning shot with .2 seconds remaining.

In a game that saw seven ties and seven lead changes, Tech took the shooting edge, 30-21. After struggling early, the Hokies took the draws advantage as well, 17-12.

Meagh Graham got the start for Tech in cage but only saw 17 minutes of action. She allowed the first six goals of the game and made three saves before she was replaced by Hannah Sieger. Sieger got her first decision of the season after logging 49 minutes in goal. She finished with three goals. Allison Sliber played the full 66 minutes in goal for Michigan and finished with eight saves.

The Hokies continue their Spring Break road swing on Saturday, March 14, for a noon game at Notre Dame.
