CONWAY, S.C. – A strong second half effort by Megan Will helped lift the Virginia Tech lacrosse team to a 10-6 victory over the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Sunday afternoon. Will scored four goals and added an assist to lead the Hokies. Jen Cosgrove led Coastal with two scores.

Despite getting on the board early with a goal from Emma Harden, the Hokies (2-3) took a while to get things going. The Harden goal came just over four minutes in, and neither team would strike against until inside 13 minutes remaining in the first half. The Chanticleers (1-1) evened the game and quickly took their first lead in less than a minute’s time.

With just under eight minutes left in the first half, Meg Bartley sparked a three-goal run for the Hokies when she bounced in her first score of the day. Meghan Macera kept the momentum in Tech’s favor when she won the ensuing draw and took it straight to the cage.

Cawley Bromley teamed up with Bartley to extend the Tech lead with just six seconds on the clock before the break. The Hokies led 4-2 at the half and held the 15-6 shooting advantage, but Tech struggled on the draw in the first half, winning just two of the seven.

The second half began with a goal from Bartley as she put away a pass from Bromley to get things going. After Cosgrove matched the early goal, Will went off to distance the Hokies. Bromley again found the goal scorer to spark the run and Will struck when she came from behind the goal on the right and bounced the shot in, following it up less than a minute later with a free position goal.

The Chanticleers refused to back down, despite the 8-3 Tech lead, as the clock ran under ten minutes. Three straight scores over the next four minutes got Coastal back in the game and cut the Tech lead to two at 8-6. The Hokies called a timeout following the third goal to regroup.

Will put a stop to the Chanticleer’s run while keeping her own going, less than a minute after the timeout when she buried another free position shot. With 3:21 left in the game she found Bartley for her third goal of the day.

Coastal upped their attempts on goal in the second half, but the Hokies still finished with the 28-21 shooting advantage. Tech did much better on the draw in the second half, winning six of the 11 opportunities.

Meagh Graham picked up the win for Tech and finished with six saves in her 60 minutes of play. Jenna Stover was in cage for the Chanticleers and made eight saves in the game.

The Hokies will return to the field on Friday, Feb. 27, hosting Old Dominion at Thompson Field at 3 p.m.
