HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Virginia Tech women’s lacrosse team was unable to get past the High Point Panthers, falling 10-6 at Vert Stadium Friday evening. Tech kept things close in the second half, but the Panthers were able to capitalize on some lost scoring opportunities by the Hokies. Megan Will led Tech with three goals, while four High Point players scored two each.

The Hokies (1-3) got things going early with a strike from Megan Will less than two minutes into the game. High Point (1-2) evened things up ten minutes later when Leah Pace scored on a free position attempt.

Meg Bartley was quick to respond with a free position goal of her own to regain the Hokie lead, but a yellow card was issued to Jessi Thon and the Panthers took their first lead of the game on the man-up situation.

The two teams traded goals to close the first half. Bartley bounced in a goal after coming from behind the cage and Will added her second on a free position shots to help make it a one-goal game at the break. The Hokies had the chance to make it a tie game, but the goal was called back.

Tech trailed 5-4 at the half, but outshot the Panthers 15-11 and forced High Point into nine first-half turnovers. Tech struggled on free position shots all day, but only capitalized on two of their seven first-half attempts.

Both teams got their offenses going early in the second half. Cawley Bromley put away a relay pass off the draw from Thon just over two minutes into the new half. The goal sparked the Hokie offense, but High Point built some momentum off of another called-off goal for Tech after the Tech player stepped in the crease on her shot. The Panthers turned it into a three-goal run that would eventually create the distance they needed for the victory.

Will scored her third goal of the game with 13:26 left in the game on a pass from Bartley. The hat trick marked her fourth of the season and eighth straight, dating back to last season.

A third opportunity for the Hokies was called back in the final two minutes of the game. Tech still finished with the shooting edge 26-23 and the advantage on draws, 10-8. Bartley added a pair of goals for the Hokies as well as six draws.

Meagh Graham got the start in cage and decision for Tech and made one save, allowing five goals, in the first 30 minutes of the game. Graham was replaced in the second half by Hannah Sieger, who saw her first action o the season. Sieger finished the game making six saves, but allowing five goals as well. Julia Burns played the full 60 minutes on cage for High Point and finished with 15 saves.

The Hokies will continue their journey south this weekend, traveling to Coastal Carolina for a 1 p.m. game on Sunday, Feb. 22.
