Burker looks forward to road weekend

The Hokies head south for a weekend in the Carolinas, making their first stop at High Point for a 4 p.m. game on Friday evening before heading to Myrtle Beach to face Coastal Carolina. The game was moved up from its original time due to the winter weather. Tech is looking to bounce back after a tough weekend at home against a pair of strong, now top-20 teams. High Point enters the weekend at 0-2 on the year and most recently fell to Oregon, 9-8, at home on Sunday.

THE SERIES

The Hokies are 3-1 all-time against High Point and the two teams have met every season since the series started in 2011. Tech claimed last year’s meeting 11-10 in Blacksburg, in a game that was moved to Moseley Field due to the winter elements. The Hokies are 1-1 on the road against the Panthers. Meg Bartley led the Tech offense a year ago with three goals, while Megan Will added a pair of scores as well. Meagh Graham set a then-career best with 12 saves in her young career.

LAST TIME OUT

Tech faced some big challenges last week, hosting a strong JMU squad, and No. 12 Ohio State. Against the Dukes Tech got out to a slow start, going down 4-0 to start the game, but Gracee Hendrix and Jessi Thon teamed up to get the Hokies on the board. That would eventually be the only first-half goal for the Hokies. Tristan McGinley got things going early in the second, and the Hokies tried to make a push late, but the difference game had been decided.

The Hokies saw an opposite performance against Ohio State, keeping things close in the first half to trail by just two goals at the break. Three straight goals to open and close the second half helped seal the win for the Buckeyes.

RECORD WATCH

Meg Bartley set a new single-season draws record for the Hokies last season, winning 90 during her junior campaign. She is also working her way to the top of the all-time list (245), currently sitting in second with 214 draws to date. Meghan Macera recently joined Bartley on the all-time draws list, as she has won 91 so far.

Megan Will is also climbing the all-time charts at Tech, chasing her cousin, Dawn Will, who sits atop the career goals and points lists. Megan currently ranks fourth with 130 career goals and third with 169 career points. She is also ninth all-time at Tech with 39 career assists.
