BLACKSBURG, Va. – Despite keeping things close in the first half, the Virginia Tech lacrosse team was unable to get past the No. 12 Ohio State Buckeyes, falling 14-7 at Thompson Field Sunday afternoon. Megan Will led the Hokies in scoring with three goals, while Cian Dabrowski put away four for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State (4-0) scored two quick goals in the first two minutes of play to establish an early lead in a game that saw a lot of back-and-forth play right away. Will was able to get Tech (1-2) on the board just over ten minutes into the game and scored back-to-back goals for the Hokies to tie things up.

The Buckeyes responded with three straight scores in a two-minute span. Will broke up the run with her third goal of the game less than a minute later, and Maddie Doan put away a free position attempt for the first goal of her career to get the Hokies back to within one, 5-4, late in the first half.

After two more Ohio State goals, Tristan McGinley ended the first half in the positive way for Tech. She found a rebounded attempt by Will and was able to pick it up and put it away to make it a 7-5 game at the break. Ohio State outshot the Hokies 19-14 in the opening 30 minutes, but Tech had the edge on draws, 7-5.

The Buckeyes got out to another quick start in the second half and strung together three straight before the Hokies could strike again. Jessi Thon passed on her free position attempt and found Meg Bartley close to the goal, who was able to put her shot away.

Thon got a goal of her own a few minutes later when she fired in a give-and-go from Will, relaying the ball off the draw to try and shift the momentum for the Hokies, but that would be the last strike for Tech.

Unforced errors plagued the Hokies in the loss as they committed 19 turnovers in the game, while Ohio State tallied 14. The Buckeyes took the shooting advantage in the game, 34-24. Mary Kate Facchina and Katie Chase also added three scores for Ohio State.

Tori DeScenza got the win for Ohio State and finished making 11 saves. Meagh Graham suffered the loss for Tech, but finished the game matching a career best with 13 saves.

Tech returns to the field for a busy weekend, traveling to High Point for a 6 p.m. game on Friday, Feb. 20, before continuing the swing Sunday at Coastal Carolina.
