LYNCHBURG, Va. – Seniors Megan Will and Cawley Bromley helped propel the Virginia Tech lacrosse team to a season-opening victory as it topped Liberty, 15-11, at the Liberty Lacrosse Field Friday evening. Will finished the game with six points, while Bromley matched career highs with three goals and two assists in the win. Sam Struss paced the Flames with five goals against Tech.
The Hokies (1-0) got on the board quickly as Kristine Loscalzo put away a pass from Jessi Thon just over a minute into the game. Will added her first score of the day to put Tech up 2-0 under five minutes in.
Both teams added a pair of goals, and Will sparked a three-goal run for the Hokies with her third goal of the day with over 17 minutes remaining in the first half. The Flames (0-1) did not back down to Tech’s five-goal lead and responded with three goals of their own, but Tech took a 9-6 lead into the halftime break.
The Hokies again got out to a fast start in the second half as Will struck for a fourth and final time just 63 seconds into the new period.
At the midway point in the second half, Liberty rallied for three quick goals to again get back within two scores at 12-10. Bartley broke up the scoring string, coming from behind the cage and creating a shot for herself in the middle to add some cushion for Tech.
With 6:37 left in the game, Will picked up her second yellow card of the game, and Liberty took advantage of the man-up situation, scoring seconds later to make it 13-11, Tech.
The Hokies were able to hold on in the final minutes, tacking one two more goals to secure the victory. Tech finished the game outshooting the Flames 37-20, and also took the 16-11 draws edge.
Meagh Graham got the start and the win in cage for the Hokies, making eight saves. Juliann Elmer finished the game with 14 saves for the Flames.
The Hokies return to action on Thursday, Feb. 12 as they host JMU at 4 p.m. at Thompson Field.
