BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team was unable to match the high-powered attack of No. 3 Syracuse, as it fell to the Orange, 18-4, Saturday afternoon at Thompson Field. The Hokies honored the team’s four seniors, Kelly Naslonski, Lindsay Roche, Becca Niles and Julia Heaps, prior to the game, as it was the last weekend home game of the 2014 season.
The steady attack of Syracuse (12-1, 4-1 ACC) was unable to strike until four minutes into the game, as it was denied by the Hokie (7-6, 0-4 ACC) defense early on. Alyssa Murray scored three of the first four goals for the Orange, all coming in the first ten minutes of play.
Junior Jack Boissonneault tried to get things going on offense for Tech when she put away a free position goal to make it a 5-1 game nearing the midway point in the half, but that would be the only production the Hokies could manage in the opening period. Tech trailed 14-1 at the break and was outshot 31-4.
Syracuse tacked on three more goals in the first six minutes of the new half, before seeing a long scoring drought. With just over 12 minutes to play, sophomore Meghan Macera ended the scoring lull for Tech when she bounced in a shot from the left side. A minute later senior Kelly Naslonski kept things going on offense for the Hokies when she put away a pass from freshman Maddy Wollmuth.
Macera struck again as the clock ran under six minutes. Junior Megan Will found her classmate cutting through the middle and quickly relayed it to Macera, who fired a quick shot into the cage.
Murray led the Orange with five goals in the game, while Kayla Treanor added four for Syracuse, which outshot Tech 42-13.
Freshman Meagh Graham played the full 60 minutes in goal and set a new career high with 13 saves in the game. Kelly Richardson got the start and the decision for Syracuse, making just one save and allowing just one goal in her 30 minutes of action. Alyssa Costantino played the entire second half and made two saves while allowing three goals.
The Hokies will have a week off before making the trek up north to face top-5 Boston College on Saturday, April 12 at noon.
