BLACKSBURG, Va. – Junior Meg Bartley had a career day on the offensive end, putting away six goals to help lead the Virginia Tech lacrosse team to an 18-7 win over the Liberty Flames at Thompson Field. Megan Will also impressed with five goals in the game, while Morgan Becker led the Flames with three goals.
Bartley and Will wasted no time getting things going for Tech (7-5). Will brought a Liberty (1-9) turnover caused by Meghan Macera all the way down the field to find Bartley near the cage for a quick turn-and-shoot to get the Hokies on the board before firing in a goal of her own just over a minute later.
Sam Struss put away a pass from Kallie Britton in an attempt to get things going for the Flames shortly after the Tech goals, but Julia Heaps sparked an 8-0 run for the Hokies with an unassisted goal less than a minute later. Bartley, Will and Macera each scored two goals in the run, while Cawley Bromley also added to Tech’s running total.
Led by Will’s five-goal tally, the Hokies hit the halftime break with a 12-2 lead. They outshot the Flames 22-6 and won 10 of the 15 draws.
Tech picked up right where it left off in the second half, as Maddy Wollmuth got things going early on and Jack Boissonneault added a free position goal to extend the lead. Production slowed for both teams as play continued and the clock ran down. Liberty put away the final two goals of the game, and neither team scored in the final six minutes.
The Hokies finished the game outshooting Liberty 36-16 as they matched their season high for goals in a game, which has been done three times this year. With the 17-10 draws edge in the game, Bartley neared a career best in that category as well, winning seven. Becca Niles had a productive day on defense for Tech, causing three turnovers and grabbing two ground balls.
Meagh Graham got the start in goal for the Hokies. She made one save and allowed two goals in the first half. Hannah Sieger took over in cage for the second half and made five saves. Kristen Masullo made the start for Liberty but saw just 7:25 of action, allowing four goals. Juliann Elmer played the remainder of the game in goal and finished with 11 saves.
Tech returns to conference play this weekend as it hosts No. 3 Syracuse on Saturday, April 5 at 1 p.m. Saturday is also Senior Day for the Hokies, as the team will honor its four seniors.
