NORFOLK, Va. -- The Virginia Tech lacrosse team held on to top the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs, 18-17, Saturday afternoon. Megan Will led the Hokies with four goals in the game, while Chirstina Rae paced the Lady Monarchs with five goals.

In a game that saw six ties, five of which came in the second half, the Hokies (6-5) never trailed from start to finish. Tech got out to a hot start, as Meghan Macera won the opening draw and took it straight to goal to start things off. Although Old Dominion’s Ashmore Standing put away a free position goal to match the Tech score, the Hokies tacked on four straight over the next three minutes to jump out to a 5-1 lead.

The Lady Monarchs (3-8) slowly worked their way back into it, getting to within one goal midway through the first half. Will struck less than 20 seconds later and a free-position goal from Cawley Bromley helped reestablish some distance for Tech.

The two teams traded goals as the first half came to a close, but Old Dominion put away two goals in the last 1:02 of the period to make it a one-goal game at the half, 11-10. Tech outshot the Lady Monarchs 20-16 in the opening half and dominated the draw 14-7.

Less than five minutes into the second half, Old Dominion tied things up with a goal from Emily Austerberry. Every time the Lady Monarchs had a chance to tie it Tech always had an answer, never allowing them to take the advantage.

With play going back-and-forth for nearly the entire half, Connor Carson gave the game its final tie when she scored with 8:47 left to play, but Bromley answered with her second goal of the day and she put away a pass from Naslonski.

The Hokies won the following draw and spread the field to run the clock out and hold onto the lead. A late Tech turnover granted Old Dominion possession back, but Macera was able to track down the attempted clear by the Lady Monarchs and get the ball back to Tech’s attacking third until the final buzzer.

Will’s first goal of the game marked the 100^th of her career as she continues to climb Tech’s all-time scoring list. After the win the junior has upped her total to 103, earning her sole possession of eighth place.

Naslonski and Jessi Thon each added three goals for the Hokies, while Naslonski also assisted two more. Macera had great success on the draw against the Lady Monarchs, finishing the game winning eight. Standing and Austerberry each added four goals for Old Dominion.

Meagh Graham got the start in cage for Tech and despite a short break at the end of the first half, she earned the win and made two saves. Karen Hayde got the start in goal for Old Dominion and allowed four goals. She was replaced early on by Maggi Buckley, who suffered the loss and made three saves.

The Hokies return to action Wednesday, April 2 as they host Liberty at 4 p.m.
