Scouting Old Dominion

Old Dominion enters the weekend at 3-7 on the year, 1-3 at home. The Lady Monarchs have suffered back-to-back losses, most recently falling at No. 16 Virginia, 19-8, on Wednesday. Emily Austerberry has led the offense this season with 22 goals and 10 assists. Austerberry has also been big on the draw for Old Dominion, winning a team-best 23 on the year.

Maggi Buckley and Karen Hayde have slipt time in goal for the Lady Monarchs. Buckley hold a 2-4 record and .477 save percentage with 71 saves, while Hayde is 1-3 on the season, making 34 saves.

Hokie Notes

-- Junior Megan Will broke onto Tech’s all-time scoring list with four goals against Coastal Carolina and the points list with three goals at No. 1 North Carolina. She is three assists away from joining that top-ten list as well.

-- Junior Cawley Bromley had a career game at William & Mary, scoring three goals and finishing with four points and made it back-to-back four-point games against Coastal.

-- Against No. 6 Duke, the Hokie defense forced the Blue Devils into a season-high 18 turnovers with their average of 10 coming in the first half, also holding them to a season-low four first-half goals.

-- Entering the week, two Hokies rank among the top 30 in the nation in their respective categories. Junior Meg Bartley ranks the highest of the pair, tied for 9th in the country averaging 5.67 draws per game.

-- Redshirt senior Julia Heaps set a career high with five goals and seven points in the season opener at James Madison.

-- Redshirt senior Julia Heaps became the second Hokie on the 2014 roster to rank among the all-time best as her three assists against High Point broke her onto the list.

-- Junior Meg Bartley is the only player to have scored in every game so far this season.

-- In this week’s polls, seven of Tech’s opponents are ranked nationally, with another receiving votes.

-- Seniors Julia Heaps, Kelly Naslonski, Lindsay Roche and Becca Niles captain the Hokies this season.

-- Tech welcomes 10 freshmen this season, as well as two new assistant coaches.

Last Time Out

The Hokies returned to conference play in the midweek this week as they travel to No. 1 North Carolina. Tech fell to the unbeaten defending national champs, 21-9 Wednesday night, but saw impressive perfromances from junior Megan Will and sophomore Jessi Thon, who each scored three goals.

The Tar Heels got out to a hot start, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first five minutes of play, but Meg Bartley got Tech on the board and the Hokies battled to eventually make it an 8-4 game with back-to-back goals from Thon and Will.

North Carolina took a 12-4 lead into the break and dominated possession in the second half, only allowing Tech to take four shots.

Freshman Meagh Graham logged the complete game in cage and finished with nine saves against the Heels.

The Nation’s Elite

Entering the week of play, two Hokies rank among the top players in the nation in their respective categories. Junior Meg Bartley boasts the highest ranking, as sheis tied for 9th with a 5.67 draws average. Junior Megan Will is tied for 20th in the country with 39 points so far this year, while alsoranking 24th with 4.33 points per game and 30th with 1.67 assists per game.

Record Watch

Junior Meg Bartley has already broken into the all-time top 10, and ranks third with 166 career draws. She has also made her second notch on the single-seasons draw list, ranking second with 69 last year.

Redshirt senior Julia Heaps broke into the all-time assists list against High Point earlier this year. She currently ranks eighth all-time with 41.

Junior Megan Will’s 42 goals last season landed her on the single-season scoring list, ranking seventh. She broke into the all-time career scoring list against Coastal Carolina and is currently tied for 9th all-time with 99 career goals and 133 career points. Will needs just three asssits to crack the top-10.
