Scouting Coastal Carolina

The Chanticleers enter the weekend matchup at 2-6 on the year, and are 0-3 on the road so far, coming off a 12-11 loss at Cincinnati. This will be the third straight road game for Coastal Carolina and the loss to the Bearcats was its fourth in a row. While the Chanticleers allow just over 11 goals per game, they are also scoring in double figures themselves, averaging 10 goals per outing.

Sara Nolan leads the Coastal Carolina offense with 15 goals, while Keri White adds 13 goals and five assists to pace the team in the points column.

On the defensive end, Nyra Constant has grabbed 15 ground balls and caused 12 turnovers for the Chanticleers. Trista Kuehn has been the go-to in cage for Coastal so far this season, starting seven of the team’s eight games. She boasts a .380 save percentage, making 38 saves and is 1-5 on the year.

-- Junior Cawley Bromley had a career game at William & Mary, scoring three goals and finishing with four points

-- Against No. 6 Duke, the Hokie defense forced the Blue Devils into a season-high 18 turnovers with their average of 10 coming in the first half, also holding them to a season-low four first-half goals.

-- Entering the week, three Hokies rank among the top 30 in the nation in their respective categories. Junior Meg Bartley ranks the highest of the group, tied for 9th in the country averaging 5.50 draws per game.

-- Redshirt senior Julia Heaps set a career high with five goals and seven points in the season opener at James Madison.

-- Junior Megan Will needs one goal to break onto Tech’s all-time scoring list.

-- Redshirt senior Julia Heaps became the second Hokie on the 2014 roster to rank among the all-time best as her three assists against High Point broke her onto the list.

-- Junior Meg Bartley is the only player to have scored in every game so far this season.

-- In this week’s polls, seven of Tech’s opponents are ranked nationally, with another receiving votes.

-- The Hokies return six starters from last season, including five of the team’s top seven scorers from a year ago.

-- Seniors Julia Heaps, Kelly Naslonski, Lindsay Roche and Becca Niles captain the Hokies this season.

-- Tech welcomes 10 freshmen this season, as well as two new assistant coaches.

Last Time Out

The Hokies bounced back in a dramatic way over the weekend as they came from behind to top William & Mary, 11-10, on the road. The win snapped a three-game losing streak and got Tech back at .500 on the year. Junior Megan Wil led the way for Tech with four goals and two assists, while her classmate Cawley Bromley had a career game with three goals and four points.

Down 3-0 early on, Will got the Hokies on the board and put away back-to-back goals just past the midway point in the opening half to give the game its first tie at 4-4. Despite being down two goals at the break, Tech worked its way back into it and tied things up twice in the second half before taking their first lead of the game with 15:35 left in the game.

Just minutes later William & Mary scored a free position goal and the Tech coaching staff called for a stick check on the goal and the score was called back due to an illegal stick. Tech dominated possession for the remainder of the game and held on to pick up the victory. Hannah Sieger played in the entire second half in goal for the Hokies and finished the game with nine saves and her first career decision.

The Nation’s Elite

Entering the week of play, three Hokies rank among the top players in the nation in their respective categories. Junior Meg Bartley boasts the highest ranking, as sheis tied for 9th with a 5.50 draws average. Junior Megan Will is tied for 23rd in the country with 31 points so far this year. Sophomore Meghan Macera’s 2.88 ground balls per game is good for 22nd in the nation.

Record Watch

Junior Meg Bartley has already broken into the all-time top 10, and ranks fourth with 156 career draws. She has also made her second notch on the single-seasons draw list, ranking second with 69 last year.

Redshirt senior Julia Heaps broke into the all-time assists list against High Point earlier this year. She currently ranks eighth all-time with 40.

Junior Megan Will’s 42 goals last season landed her on the single-season scoring list, ranking seventh. She is on pace to break into the all-time scoring list this season, needing just one more goal to be tied for tenth. Will has scored 92 goals to date.
