NEWARK, Del. – The Virginia Tech women’s lacrosse team was unable to match the attack of the Delaware Blue Hens and fell 17-3 at Delaware Stadium Wednesday night. Junior Meg Bartley led Tech’s limited attack with two goals and added five draws. Casey Lyons paced the Blue Hens with five goals and an assist, while Caitlin McCartney posted five points with three goals and two assists.

Delaware (4-3) got out to a hot start, attacking immediately after winning the opening draw and put in three goals in the first seven minutes of play. Lyons was the scorer on two of the three in the game-opening run, and Chelsea Fay added a free position goal to make it a 4-0 run in the first ten minutes.

In her first return home to Delaware as a Hokie, Bartley put away back-to-back goals for the Tech (3-4) in an attempt to get things going. The Hokies’ early struggle on the draw didn’t help keep possession, but Tech was able to even things out as the half continued.

The Blue Hens tacked on four more goals by the end of the half to go up 8-3, but redshirt senior Julia Heaps broke up the run at three goals when she buried a pass from junior Megan Will, who picked up a Delaware turnover at the restraining line and headed straight down field.

Delaware outshot the Hokies 13-9 in the opening period, but the draws were even at six apiece.

It was all Blue Hens in the second half, as they had no problem moving the ball through the Tech defense and getting to goal. Delaware scored 40 seconds into the new half and added three more before Tech switched things up in cage. The goalie change didn’t waiver the Blue Hen attack, as it scored just 30 seconds later.

Tech had multiple opportunities to get something going in the second half, but its 10 second-half turnover, and 19 total, prevented the build of any momentum.

Delaware outshot Tech 24-15 in the game and limited itself to just three second-half turnovers after making eight in the first half.

Freshman Meagh Graham got the start and the decision in goal and made just one save in her 54 minutes of action, while sophomore Hannah Sieger saw the other six minutes. Tori Zorovich got the start in goal and played nearly the entire game, finishing with the win and five of the six saves.a

Tech’s next stop on the Spring Break road trip will be Williamsburg, Va., as the Hokies take on William & Mary Saturday, March 15 at 1 p.m.
