FARMVILLE, Va. – Junior Megan Will led the Virginia Tech lacrosse team with seven points as the Hokies took down the Longwood Lancers, 15-8, Wednesday evening. Will scored five goals in the victory and assisted two more, while Kacey Norwood led the Lancers with two goals and three assists.

The Hokies (3-1) got out to a slow start against the Lancers (1-2) and neither team was able to hold onto the ball or get a shot off until eight minutes into the action. Redshirt senior Julia Heaps got Tech on the board when she came from behind the cage and fired a shot past the Longwood goalie.

Although the Lancers quickly tied things up, freshman Maddy Wollmuth buried a free position shot to regain the lead. Will, who set a career high with six goals and eight points against Longwood a season ago, tried to give the Hokies a spark when she strung together three straight goals over the next four minutes.

Tech’s defense provided great pressure throughout the first half, helping stop both of Longwood’s free position attempts. Tech took a 6-1 lead into the break and the 10-7 shots advantage. Despite being perfect in transition in the opening half, Tech committed seven turnovers in the opening thirty minutes, but also forced six.

Tech scored less than a minute into the new half, when junior Meg Bartley put away a pass from Heaps. A goal from Longwood’s Lauren Prasnicki capitalized on an early Tech turnover, but it set up back-to-back opportunities for the Hokies as they won the ensuing draw and relayed it to the cage on two straight possessions.

With Tech shutting down the Lancers’ shooting lanes on the defensive end, the attack took off on a five-goal tear to make it a 14-5 game with 11 minutes left to play. The Hokies never let Longwood score twice in a row until the end of the game, with the sequential scores coming more than six minutes apart.

Tech outshot the Lancers 29-18 in the game and dominated the draw 18-7. Bartley finished the game winning eight draws, while sophomore Meghan Macera came up with eight. The pair also helped lead the offense as they added to Heaps’ three goals and two assists with three points each. Bartley scored three times and Macera put away two goals and assisted another.

Freshman Meagh Graham got the start and the decision on goal, allowing five goals and making five stops. Sophomore Hannah Sieger relieved her for the final 11 minutes of action and allowed three goals and made thee saves. Christian Acker took the loss for Longwood, playing the full game and making eight saves.

The Hokies return to action to host ACC newcomer and No. 12 Notre Dame on Sunday March 2. The game at Thompson Filed will begin at noon.
