BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team rolled past the Elon Phoenix, 17-7, Sunday afternoon at Thompson Field. Redshirt senior Julia Heaps and junior Megan Will led the Hokies with four goals apiece, while Molly Garrigan put away four for the Pheonix.
Tech (2-1) got out to a hot start, scoring five straight to open the game, as five different players scored in the run. Elon (0-3) wasn’t able to get on the board until the midway point in the half, when Garrigan buried her first goal of the game. Tech answered 11 seconds later after winning the ensuing draw as freshman Maddy Wollmuth relayed it to senior Kelly Naslonski for the score.
The Hokies took an 8-2 lead into the half, as well as an 18-6 shooting advantage.
Elon came out of the break on the attack and put away a pair of goals early in the new period, but Tech answered the scores and began to put the game away when it went on a six-goal run with just over eight minutes left in the game. Heaps started things off for the Hokies with back-to-back scores and sophomore Meghan Macera tacked on another before junior Meg Bartley put away two within a minute’s time. Will capped off the run when she scooped up a deflected shot and flicked the rebound back into the cage.
Tech took 25 shots in the second half and finished the game with the 43-15 edge. The Hokies also dominated the draw, winning 22 of the 26 in the game. Bartley, who scored three goals for Tech, led the team with eight draws. Macera finished with two goals and five ground balls.
Meagh Graham got the win in goal for the Hokies as she played the first half and was replaced by sophomore Hannah Sieger after halftime. Graham made three saves and allowed two goals, while Sieger allowed five goals and made two saves. Rachel Ramirez played the full 60 minutes in cage for the Phoenix and finished the game making 16 saves, causing two turnovers and grabbing six ground balls.
The Hokies will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 26 as they travel to Longwood for a 4 p.m. game.
