Scouting Elon

The Phoenix are in their first season at the Division I level and enter Sunday’s game at 0-2 on the season. Elon opened the year at Duke and fell 25-4 to the Blue Devils. It will round out a weekend roadtrip in Virginia with a trip to Blacksburg after dropping their second straight at Liberty, 13-9.

Annie Shenk leads the Phoenix with five goals on the year, while Sloane Kessler has also tallied five points so far, byway of two goals and three assists.

Rachel Ramirez has started both games in goal for Elon and made 18 saves, boasting a .321 save percentage.

Hokie Notes

-- Redshirt senior Julia Heaps set a career high with five goals and seven points in the season opener at James Madison.

-- Heaps became the second Hokie on the 2014 roster to rank among the all-time best as her three assists against High Point were good enough to tie her for tenth.

-- The Hokies return six starters from last season, including five of the team’s top seven scorers from a year ago.

-- Tech finished the 2013 season at 8-8 and has yet to suffer a losing season since head coach Megan Burker took over in 2011.

-- Seniors Julia Heaps, Kelly Naslonski, Lindsay Roche and Becca Niles will captain the Hokies this season.

-- Tech welcomes 10 freshmen this season, as well as two new assistant coaches.

-- In this week’s polls, seven of Tech’s opponents are rankednationally, with another receiving votes.

-- Junior Meg Bartley returns for the Hokies this year after leading the ACC in draw controls last season and ranking in the top 20 in the nation.

Last Time Out

The Hokies picked up their first win of the season on Wednesday with a victory over High Point. Meg Bartley led the Hokies with three goals, while Julia Heaps added a goal and three assists to put herself on Tech’s all-time assists list. Tech opened the game scoring three straight goals, but hit the half with just a 4-3 lead.

A five-goal run, capped off by a pair of scores from Megan Will gave the Hokies some comfortable distance midway through the second half, but High Point put away four straight in the final eight minutes to make it a one-goal game. Goalie Meagh Graham was huge for Tech, coming up big late, and finished the game with 12 saves.

Veteran Advantage

Redshirt senior Julia Heaps got her final season as a Hokie off to an impressive start at James Madison. Heaps has a career day, setting new highs in goals (5) and points (7), while inching herself closer to having her name on Tech’s all-time assists list with two in the game.

In the home opener against High Point, Heaps made her way onto Tech’s all-time assists list with three in the game. She is currently tied for 10th all-time with 35 career assists.
