Klockner Stadium - 927 Box Score

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Despite keeping things close for much of the first half, the Virginia Tech lacrosse team was unable to overcome the No. 16 Virginia Cavaliers, as it fell 10-5 at Klockner Stadium on the Virginia campus Wednesday night. The Hokie offense was led by Jack Boissonneault, who put away two goals, while Virginia saw ten different players score. Casey Bocklet and Ashlee Warner both finished with two points.

Virginia (8-8, 1-4 ACC) took the early lead, putting away a pair of goals in the first five minutes of play. Erin Laschinger was open inside the 8-meter on a fast break and put away a long pass from Megan Dunleavy for the game’s first goal. Morgan Stephens added a free position goal less than a minute later after winning the draw and being fouled going straight to goal.

Tech (8-6, 0-4 ACC) did not let the early lead last long as Megan Will quickly responded for the Hokies when she fired one into the goal from the right side. Play remained close following the sophomore’s goal, and the Hokies nearly added another goal after Brooke Martin scored but the goal came after she was fouled and her ensuing free position attempt was denied.

Later in the first half, Virginia began to distance itself, scoring four unanswered goals to close out the half. The Cavaliers took not only the 6-1 lead, but a 14-7 shooting advantage and 6-2 draws edge into the break.

The Hokies respond out of the halftime break as Jack Boissonneault worked her way in on the left side and scored the first goal of the new half. Virginia responded quickly with a free position goal, but it was Boissonneault again, minutes later, with an 8-meter goal of her own.

Keeping the momentum in Tech’s favor, Maddy Hess made it a 3-goal game at 7-4 when she cut across from the left and had an open look at the right side of the cage to put away a pass from Libby Rosebro.

After both teams went nearly ten minutes without a goal, Taylor Ranftle sparked a 3-goal run for the Cavaliers with 12 minutes to play. Meg Bartley broke up the streak when she found the back of the goal, connecting on a pass from Will with five minutes to go.

Normally very productive in the category, Tech struggled on the draw as the Cavaliers finished the game with the 11-6 advantage, while also outshooting the Hokies 24-12.

Alex Gale received the decision and finished her 51 minutes of play making six saves. She was replaced for the final nine minutes of action by Alexis Carey. Kim Kolarik made it a full game in cage and finished with five saves.

Tech will return home for Senior Day on Saturday, April 20 and host No. 1 Maryland in the Noon contest.
