Scouting Old Dominion

The Lady Monarchs enter the weekend at 3-5 on the season after breaking a two-game winning streak with a loss to Longwood, 17-11, earlier this week. Old Dominion has had trouble on the road this season, sitting at just 1-4 away from home.

Ashmore Standing leads the attack for the Lady Monarchs this season, scoing 18 goals so far. Meredith Rogers also adds a balanced effort on offense with nine goals and six assists this season.

Alexandra Burns has paced the Lady Monarchs’ defensive effort with 20 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers on the year. Karen Hayde has been in cage for ODU this season, boasting the team’s 3-5 record, as well as a .337 save percentage.

Last Time Out

The Hokies did not play a midweek game this week, resting up for the matchup with Old Dominion after a big week in California over Spring Break. Tech switched coasts last week to take on UC Davis and California, returning to Blacksburg with a pair of commanding victories. The Hokies got out to a great start when they knocked off Davis 16-7. Megan Will had a career day as she finished the game with six goals, missing just one shot the entire game. Kelly Naslonski again gave the Hokies a solid effort off the bench as she assisted three goals, and Meg Bartley won six draws in the game.

Tech used the momentum from the Davis win and carried it over against Cal that weekend, topping the Bears 13-8. It was the early play of the Hokie defense and senior goalie Alex Gale that made the difference to start things off. Gale made four stops on Cal’s opening possession and would eventually finish the game with 10 saves.

Will scored three goals and assisted another in the win, while Brooke Martin led the way with four scores and Bartley won eight draws.

The Hokies will remain at home and return to conference play a week from Saturday as they host top-5 North Carolina on Easter weekend.

Controlling the Draw

The Hokies as a team have dominated the draw this season, winning 117 so far, while their opponent has only won 89. Sophomore Meg Bartley leads the league averaging 4.67 per game.

Offensive Charge

The Hokies currently trail on Maryland and Duke amongst league teams in offensive production. Tech averages 11.22 goals per game, 4.33 assists per game and 15.56 points per game. Showing great efficiency, the Hokies have earned their thrid-place ranking while taking the fewest shots per game among league teams.

Record Watch

Senior Alex Gale is the only current player on Tech’s roster to rank amongst the all-time best in career stats, as she sits in fifth place at Tech with 340 career saves.

Sophomore Meg Bartley broke into the all-time top 10 as she bumped her career draw control total up to 85 last week. She currently ranks eight among Tech’s best.

Senior Julia Heaps is on the brim of cracking into the top-10 at Tech as she has 24 career assists. She needs 11 assists.
