BERKELEY, Calif. – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team made it back-to-back wins on the West Coast as it took down the California Golden Bears 13-8 at Memorial Stadium on the Cal campus Saturday afternoon. Senior Brooke Martin finished the game with four goals, while Megan Will also tallied four points with three goals and an assist. Megan Takacs led the Bears with three goals.

The back-and-forth game opened with the Hokies (5-4) winning the first draw, but the Tech defense was quickly challenged. Senior goalie Alex Gale came to play as she made four saves during Cal’s first possession and eventually helped Tech get the ball back.

Four minutes into the game Cal (3-3) was the first to score as Takacs put away a pass from Melissa Humphery. The Hokies didn’t take long to respond as Will buried a free position attempt to get the Hokies on the board after being fouled on her first attempt, and Julia Heaps gave Tech its first lead when she came from behind the cage and worked her way into the middle to create an open look for herself.

The two teams proceeded to trade possessions as the first half went on, but the Hokies closed the half with two straight goals with under two minutes to play. Meg Bartley found the back of the goal on a free position attempt and about 45 seconds later Will took a pass from Kelly Naslonski and attacked the left side and put one away to give Tech the 5-4 halftime edge.

Despite the lead, Cal outshot the Hokies 17-12 in the first half, but Tech took the 6-4 edge on draws and was a perfect 3-for-3 on free position attempts.

Martin got things going for the Hokies to start off the second half as she took advantage of a free position opportunity after the Bears received their third yellow card of the day.

Tech strung together five straight goals after the clock ticked under the 22-minute mark, until the midway point in the second half to give the Hokies a 12-6 lead. Six different players earned a point during the run.

With under ten minutes remaining in the game, the Bears tried to get things going as they put away back-to-back goals in a 20-second span, but Tech called a timeout to regroup and would not allow Cal to get to the goal again.

Tech continued its 8-meter success as four of its eight goals came from free position attempts, while Cal was unable to connect on all four of their attempts in the second half.

Both teams took 28 shots in the game as Tech kept the draws edge in its favor, 14-9. Bartley dominated the draw for the Hokies as she finished the game winning eight.

Gale finished the game with 10 saves, also earning the win, while Cal’s Megan McGinnis made 11 saves.

The Hokies will have the week off as they return back home to host Old Dominion on Saturday March 23 at 1 p.m.
