BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team returned to its winning ways Saturday afternoon as it took down Mount St. Mary’s 13-4 at Thompson Field. Megan Will and Julia Heaps both paced the Tech offense with three goals and an assist, while Lindsay Diaz scored three of the four goals for the Mount and assisted the other.

The Hokies (3-3) got out to a 3-0 start in the first ten minutes of the game, two of which came from Will. Will attacked the Mountaineer (0-4) defense early on, controlling the right side of the 8-meter coming in strong on the first one and using a juke move to get an open look to the left of her defender on the second. Freshman Meghan Macera continued the game-opening streak when she caused a turnover just past the first restraining line and took it straight to the goal.

Senior Libby Rosebro made it a 4-0 lead two minutes later before Hayley Tomilson put away a pass from Diaz to get the Mount on the board.

Back-to-back goals from Brooke Martin and another score for Macera helped the Hokies lengthen their lead in the first half, while Heaps followed with the next goal and then assisted Meg Bartley’s goal under 20 seconds later. Kelly Naslonski put one away with 5:36 left on the clock to give the Hokies the eventual 10-1 lead at the half.

The Hokies outshot the Mount 33-12 in the first half, also winning 10 of the 15 draws.

While Tech dominated possession in the second half, production slowed. Heaps was the first to strike in the new session and made it a 10-goal lead. Cawley Bromley assisted Tech’s final two goals of the game with a quick flick to Will for her third of the game and then she dumped the ball off to Heaps, who put it in the bottom of the cage.

Diaz put away back-to-back free position shots and added another goal with 56 seconds left in the game, but the difference was too large to overcome.

Tech outshot the Mount 33-12 in the game and won 15 of the 22 draws. The Hokies caused a season-high 10 turnovers in the game.

All three goalies saw time in cage for Tech, but it was Alex Gale that got the win, making four saves. For Mount St. Mary’s Sarah Jane Leder earned the start and the decision, but played just the first 30 minutes, allowing 10 goals and making seven saves. Steph Rurkowski finished the game for the Mountaineers and allowed three goals, making just one save.

The Hokies will have the week off, but return to action Saturday March 9 when Boston College comes to town for a Noon contest at Thompson Field.
