DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season, topping Davidson 12-8 Wednesday night at Richardson Stadium on the Davidson campus. Megan Will led the charge for the Hokies with four goals and an assist, while Julia Heaps also tallied five points in the game. Emily Cooke scored four goals for the Wildcats.
The Hokies (1-2) got out to a slow start, as Davidson (0-1) was the first to strike just over five minutes in, but they responded when Meg Bartley got them on the board coming from behind the cage on the left side and dumping the first goal in. Will was able to tack on another one for Tech and give it the 2-1 lead, ten minutes into the game when she put away a free position attempt.
Davidson’s Emily Rademacher knotted the game at two apiece minutes later, but a powerful shot from right in front of the goal by Heaps regained the Tech advantage. Less than a minute after her own goal, Heaps flicked a quick pass to Bartley to create some distance and go up 4-2.
Heaps was in on the next three Tech goals, scoring the final goal of the half and assisting the two before. Heading into the break, Tech outshot the Wildcats 17-9.
Though Davidson was again the first to score in the second half, but the Hokies set the tone early putting away three goals in the first ten minutes. Will kicked things off just seconds after Davidson scored when she got the ball from an attacking Jessi Thon, who got the ball off the draw, and buried the shot to put Tech up 8-5.
The Wildcats made it a two-goal game midway through the second half with back-to-back goals in less than a minute, but Tech tacked on two more and would not allow another Davidson goal.
Will’s four goals and five points matched her career high, while Heaps set a new mark for herself with three assists. Bartley also set a new career best, winning nine draws.
The Hokies outshot Davidson 25-17 in the game, also winning 14 of the 22 draws. Tech’s goalie Alex Gale picked up the win and finished the game making five saves, while Jessica Melby took the loss for the Wildcats and made four saves in the game.
Tech will return to action this weekend as it wraps up a four-game road stretch on Saturday, Feb. 23 at Coastal Carolina. The game will begin at noon.
