HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team was unable to find its momentum as it fell 9-5 to the High Point Panthers at Vert Stadium on the High Point campus. Senior Libby Rosebro led the Tech offense with two goals, while Alec Perry scored three goals for the Panthers.

High Point (1-0) came out ready to attack early on. Though Tech (0-2) won the opening draw, the Panthers came right at Tech goalie Alex Gale, forcing her to make three saves, also dinging one off the post, on just their second possession of the game.

Neither team was able to get anything going offensively, despite numerous shots and free position attempts early on. It wasn’t until midway through the first half that a goal was scored, when Mackenzie Carroll put one away for the Panthers. Less than a minute later, Stephanie Pazulski found the back of the cage on a quick flick from Kendyl Gardner to put High Point up 2-0.

As time was winding down in the first half, senior Julia Heaps finally got the Hokies on the board when she worked her way around the cage and under a defender to find herself face-to-face with the goalie and dumped one in to make it 2-1 heading into the break.

High Point outshot the Hokies 14-10 in the first half, and the Hokies committed eight turnovers.

The Panthers kept rolling in the second half, adding four goals in the first ten minutes of the new period. Senior Libby Rosebro was able to break up the run when she fought for her own rebound on a free position attempt and buried it.

Just over a minute later Rosebro struck again when she worked the ball in from the right side and made it back-to-back goals.

Sophomore Cawley Bromley helped chip away at High Point’s lead when she fired her free position attempt past the Panthers’ goalie to make it an 8-4 game.

Senior Brooke Martin made it a three-goal game when she put away a pass from freshman Jessi Thon with under eight minutes to play, but High Point quickly responded to keep the distance.

The Panthers outshot Tech 27-19 in the game, as the Hokies finished the outing with 17 total turnovers, compared to High Point’s 11. Tech made just one free position shot on seven attempts.

Gale made 11 saves on the day, while High Point’s goalie Anna Wallingford picked up the win and made eight saves.

The Hokies will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 20 as they travel to Davidson for a 4 p.m. game.
