Ludwig Field - 1,042 Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Virginia Tech lacrosse fell to the No. 4 Maryland Terrapins, 19-5, Saturday afternoon at Ludwig Field on the Maryland campus. Tech took charge in the second half, but was unable to steal the momentum and overcome the early difference.

Kelly McPartland led the Terp offense with four goals on the day, while five different Hokies scored for Tech.

Despite numerous attempts, Tech (9-6, 1-4 ACC) was unable to get anything going in the first half, as Maryland (13-3, 3-2 ACC) held the Hokies scoreless for the second time this season. The Terps got out to a substantial lead, scoring 11 goals in the opening period. Brooke Griffin put away three for her team, while Alex Aust helped on three more.

The Terps outshot Tech 16-7 in the first half, as Tech was plagued by nine turnovers. The two teams were even on the draw as each won six to begin the game.

Senior Jessica Nonn finally broke through the Maryland defense and got the Hokies on the board five minutes into the new period after she got a hold of a loose ball after numerous Tech shots and went straight for the cage.

Junior Libby Rosebro kept things rolling for the Hokies when she put away a pass from freshman Meg Bartley. Bartley attempted to attack the goal, but was forced back behind the cage and quickly fired a pass at a crashing Rosebro for the score.

Two minutes later, senior Morgan Widlake struck again for Tech after grabbing a desperation pass from freshman Megan Will, who was falling after trying to make a play.

The third Hokie goal in ten minutes forced a Maryland timeout, but the stop in play did not phase Tech as it continued to attack and try to overcome the difference. Junior Brooke Martin made it a 12-4 game when she drove the left side and bounced a shot into the goal with just over 14 and a half minutes to play.

Maryland’s Katie Schwarzmann broke up the Tech rally when she scored with 10 minutes on the clock, but freshman Jack Boissonneault teamed up with Rosebro to add another goal for the Hokies.

The Terps responded to Tech’s second-half run in the closing minutes, adding six more goals to their total in the final 10 minutes of play.

The Hokies played a much cleaner game in the second half, making just three turnovers, and the two teams remained even on the draw with 13 apiece in the game, but Maryland did walk away with the shooting edge, 27-15.

Junior Alex Gale saw the full 60 minutes in cage and made three saves on the afternoon, while Maryland utilized three different goalies. Starter Brittany Dipper received the victory and made all four of the team’s saves in 31 minutes played, while Kasey Howard let in all five Hokie goals in just 13 minutes of action.

Tech will return to action next week as it participates in the ACC Tournament, hosted this year by Duke University in Durham, N.C. The Hokies will play Friday, April 20 but the time of the game has not been determined.
