The Virginia Tech lacrosse team kept things rolling as it took down Longwood, 14-6, on the road Wednesday evening. Senior Morgan Widlake paced the offense with three goals and an assist, while also grabbing a season high seven ground balls. Jamie Brentlinger and Jessica Rudloff each put away two goals for the Lancers.

After utilizing a few long possessions in the opening minutes, the Hokies (9-5) got on the board first when Widlake buried a shot after just over eight minutes of play.

Senior Jessica Nonn continued the trend when she scored seconds later. Freshman Meg Bartley continued the rally and junior Libby Rosebro capped it off when she came from behind the cage to redirect a pass from Widlake, after Widlake passed up a free position shot.

Through the game-opening scoring spree, junior goalie Alex Gale and the defense held strong on their end of the field. Gale made three big saves in the opening ten minutes, using all parts of her body to stop any attempts by the Lancers (1-8).

Longwood finally broke through just past the midway point in the half, when Mary Barondess put away the team’s first goal. Jessica Rudloff tried to get things going for the Lancers inside seven minutes remaining in the half as she put away back-to-back goals in a minute’s time.

Widlake would add another goal before the halftime break to keep the Tech momentum going as the team hit the locker room up 7-4, outshooting the Lancers 19-7.

Longwood again won the opening draw to begin the second half and got on the board right away, but Rosebro answered just over a minute later when she bounced in a free position shot after being fouled.

Nonn and freshman Megan Will tacked on goals to give the Hokies a 10-4 lead, and after a quick Longwood goal, senior Ryan Rotanz got Tech back to the six-goal difference we she picked up her own loose ball in traffic and ran across the goal to bury a shot back the other way.

Freshman Jack Boissonneault tacked on two more goals for the Hokies and Widlake added another to close out the game.

Gale continued her aggressive play in the second half and finished the game with seven saves, matching her season high for the fifth time. In goal for the Lancers was Mollie Zimmerman, who made 11 stops on the night.

Tech outshot the Lancers 30-18 in the game and grabbed 21 ground balls, compared to Longwood’s 15 on the night.

The Hokies will return to action Saturday, April 14 as they travel to No. 4 Maryland for their final conference game of the season at Noon.
