CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team came alive in the second half but was unable to keep up with the No. 5 North Carolina Tar Heels, as it fell 15-4 at Fetzer Field on the North Carolina campus Sunday afternoon.

Nearly all of Tech’s production came from freshmen Jack Boissonneault and Cawley Bromley, who combined for three points in the game. Kara Cannizzaro led the Tar Heel offense with four goals in the game, all coming in the first half.

Freshman Meg Bartley earned the Hokies (7-5, 0-3 ACC) the opening possession, winning the first draw of the game, but North Carolina (12-1, 4-0 ACC) would be the first on the board with a free position goal from Cannizzaro.

Slow play and back-and-forth possession dominated the opening ten minutes but the Tar Heels kept a steady pace attacking and were able to finish on the majority of their opportunities.

North Carolina’s pace slowed inside ten minutes before the half, but Cannizzaro’s four first-half goals helped her team take a 12-0 lead into the break. This was the first scoreless half of the season for the Hokies. Tech’s previous low was two goals, which happened three times this season.

Entering the second half with a running clock, the Tar Heels were able to extend their lead by two more goals before the Hokies were able to ruin the shutout.

Boissonneault finally got Tech on the board ten minutes into the new period, after being fouled and awarded a free position attempt.

Seconds later, Bromley, a native of Cary, N.C., kept things rolling for the Hokies as she finished a fast break pass from junior Libby Rosebro after she won the draw.

Also battling the running clock, the Hokies refused to let up and continued attacking. Boissonneault made it two goals on the day when she put away another free position shot. Seniors Ryan Rotanz and Morgan Widlake teamed up four minutes later as Rotanz buried a quick pass from Widlake, who was behind the cage.

North Carolina possessed the ball for much of the closing minutes of the game, spreading the field and working the ball around.

Tech outshot the Tar Heels 12-9 in the second half, but the Heels took the advantage for the game, 28-18. The Hokies also took the edge on draws, much in part to the work of Bartley who won seven of the team’s 11 draws. North Carolina won 10 in the game.

Junior Alex Gale got the start in cage and played an aggressive 44 minutes before being relieved by classmate Alexis Carey with just under 16 minutes to play in the game. Gale made all six saves in the game and allowed all 15 goals.

The Tar Heels used three different goalies in the game as Lauren Maksym made the start and played 18 and a half minutes. Taylor Thomas saw the most time in goal, 33 and a half minutes, and allowed all four goal, also making seven saves. Britt Giacco finished the final eight minutes of the game in goal.

The Hokies will have the week off before returning to action on Saturday, April 7 to host nationally-ranked Virginia at 1 p.m.
