BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team made it three straight wins Tuesday evening when it topped the Liberty Lady Flames 13-8 at Thompson Field. This marks the longest win streak of the season for the Hokies, who were led by senior Ryan Rotanz with four goals and five points. Pacing the Lady Flames was Morgan Becker, who put away four goals on the night.

Tech (7-4) was the first to score as junior Brooke Martin connected on a pass from freshman Meg Bartley, but Liberty (2-7) answered with two quick goals two and a half minutes later.

Rotanz halted the short run from the Lady Flames when she found the back of the goal after receiving a pass from sophomore Lindsay Roche, and Tech regained the advantage when Bartley put away one of her own.

Each team tacked on two more goals before the midway point in the half, after which neither team was able to get anything going until under the one-minute mark. Rotanz broke the nearly 15-minute scoring drought with a goal 42 seconds before halftime to give Tech the 6-4 lead heading into the break.

The Hokies dominated possession in the first half, outshooting Liberty 17-8 in the period. Two of the Lady Flames’ four goals came on free position attempts in the first half, while Tech came up short on all four free position opportunities.

A chance to regroup again proved to be the spark the Hokies needed as they came out of halftime fresh and ready to play. Tech scored the first six goals of the second half, including two from both Rotanz and Martin, to distance the Hokies, 12-4.

The Hokies held off Liberty until the 7:08 mark, when Mikayla Henry came all the way around from behind the goal to score and try to start something for her team.

Senior Jessica Nonn put away a free position attempt to counter the Liberty goal, but the Lady Flames would not give up. Becker was able to connect for the third time on the night a minute later and Liberty tacked one two more goals in the final three minutes, but the clock cut the comeback short.

Tech outshot the Lady Flames 30-17 in the game, but struggled all night on the draw as Liberty took that advantage, 13-10.

Martin finished the night with three goals and four points, while senior Morgan Widlake put away a pair of goals.

Both teams saw action from two goalies in the game as junior Alex Gale got the start for the Hokies and matched her season high with seven saves in 54 minutes, also allowing five goals. Gale was relieved by classmate Alexis Carey, who allowed three goals in six minutes of action. Kristen Massulo saw 45 minutes of game time in goal for the Lady Flames and allowed nine goals, but made 11 stops. Kristin Boland played the final 15 minutes of the game and allowed four goals, making one save.

Tech will return to action and the road again this weekend as it travels to No. 5 North Carolina for a 1 p.m. game on Sunday, April 1.
