NEWTON, Mass. – In the conference opener for both squads, the Virginia Tech lacrosse team came up short, 17-10 against the No. 18 Boston College Eagles on Saturday afternoon. Freshmen Meg Bartley and Jack Boissonneault led the offense with two goals each, while Boston College was led by Mikaela Rix, who put away four goals on the day.

An action-packed first half began with a quick Boston College (4-2, 1-0 ACC) goal from Kristin Igoe 30 seconds into the game, but Tech (4-3, 0-1 ACC) answered one minute later when Shannon Bone drove the middle and found the back of the goal.

The Eagles began to pull away with three straight goals, but a free position goal from Jessica Nonn, followed by an up close roll-in from Bartley got Tech back to within one at 4-3.

Boston College continued to pile on the offense as it strung together five consecutive scores. The large run was interrupted by back-to-back free position goals from the Hokies to make it 9-5, Eagles. Boston College added four more before the half to head into the intermission up 13-5.

Production slowed in the second half as both teams added just one goal in the opening 11 minutes. Rix put one in for the Eagles three minutes into the new period, and Boissonneault tacked one on for the Hokies.

Five minutes later Boissonneault struck again for Tech, but Boston College responded quickly. Five minutes later, Bartley added her second of the day and prompted a Boston College timeout after making it 15-8, Eagles.

Remaining relentless, the Hokies continued to battle in the waning minutes of the game as Kelly Naslonski buried her first goal of the day and Brooke Martin also found the back of the cage one minute later to make it 15-10, Boston College.

Rix and Sam Taylor added a goal each for the Eagles to keep the distance, as the Eagles spread the field and let the time run off the clock to close the game.

Boston College outshot the Hokies 26-19 in the game, but one 10-9 in the second half. Tech took the edge on draws, winning 16 of the 29, including seven of the 10 in the second half.

Junior Alex Gale made the start in cage and saw the bulk of the minutes. She was relieved by classmate Alexis Carey to finish out the first half but played the entire second half. She finished the day with four saves, allowing 15 goals. Carey made one save and allowed two goals in seven minutes of action. Catherine Conway manned the goal for Boston College, making seven saves and allowing 10 goals on the day.

Tech continues conference play this Wednesday as it hosts top-five Duke at 3 p.m. at Thompson Field.
