BLACKSBURG, Va. – A strong first half from senior Jessica Nonn and a valiant freshmen effort to close things out helped lift the Virginia Tech lacrosse team past the American University Eagles, 14-11, at Thompson Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Nonn led the way with five goals, while freshmen Megan Will, Meg Bartley and Jack Boissonneault combined for six points in the second half to help closeout the win. Lauren Shoenberger and Emily Burton, who put away four goals apiece, led the Eagles.

American (3-2) took control of the game early as Emily Burton put the Eagles on the board first. Nonn responded quickly but American continued to push, tacking on five more goals through the first 15 minutes of the game.

Junior Brooke Martin responded for the Hokies (4-2) as she sparked a three-goal run nine seconds after American’s sixth goal. Though the Hokies never led in the first half, they did tie things up on three occasions, including with two second to go until the intermission when Bartley made it 7-7.

Nonn kicked off the second half for the Hokies with a free position goal a minute and a half into the new period, giving Tech its first lead of the day.

American responded with two goals of its own, but the Hokies did not back down. Bartley connected on a pass from sophomore Kelly Naslonski to break a 9-9 tie and ignite a four-goal scoring streak that saw goals from fellow freshmen Will and Boissonneault. The run was capped off by a goal from junior defender Charlotte Marsh, who went coast-to-coast with blazing speed after being fouled in Tech’s end of the field.

Two straight goals late in the game got the Eagles within one but Bartley and Will tacked on one more score each to again distance the Hokies and claim the victory.

Bartley and Will finished the day with three goals each as Tech outshot the Eagles 25-16 in the game.

Junior Alex Gale earned the win and made three saves on the day, while American’s Kaska Komosinski made six saves.

Tech will begin conference play this weekend as it returns to the field Saturday, March 10 for a Noon game at No 18/13 Boston College.
