BLACKSBURG, Va. – A strong second half surged the Virginia Tech lacrosse team past the UC Davis Aggies, 18-14, on Saturday afternoon. For the second time this season, the Hokies were forced to play on the Moseley Field turf, this time due to heavy rain the night before.

Senior Morgan Widlake and freshman Meg Bartley led the Hokie offense with four goals each, while Anna Geissbuhler tallied four goals for the Aggies.

UC Davis (2-3) was the first on the board as Elizabeth Datino put one away for the Aggies a minute and a half into play. Tech (3-2) responded 20 seconds later when Brooke Martin tied the game up and sparked a three-goal run for Tech.

UC Davis strung together a run of its own beginning just inside the 12-minute mark. They regained the lead by the end of the four-goal rally, 6-4, but the Hokies would not back down.

It was Martin again that ignited the fire for Tech when she connected on a pass from Bartley with five minutes remaining until the halftime break. The Hokies went for four straight scores in the final minutes of the half and took an 8-7 lead into the break, despite a goal by the Aggies with under a minute to go.

Play was close in the opening period as Tech outshot the Aggies just 14-12.

Widlake and freshman Megan Will got things going right away in the second half for Tech as Widlake was the first to strike, 39 seconds into the new half, and Will followed with her only goal of the day 14 seconds after that.

The Hokies added two more goals in the opening ten minutes. After UC Davis put away two straight scores with 14 minutes remaining in the game to inch back into it at 14-10, neither team scored in back-to-back fashion for the remainder of the game.

Both teams had eight players score goals in the outing as Tech outshot the Aggies 29-23 in the game. The Hokies also took the slight advantage in ground balls, 15-13, and draw controls, 19-11.

Junior Alex Gale started the game and saw 48 minutes of action. She let up 11 goals and made three saves. She was relieved by Alexis Carey, who made two saves and allowed three goals in her 12 minutes.

The Aggies also made a goalie change as Jordan Majka made the start and let up 13 goals in 41 minutes. Kai Murphy finished the final 19 minutes of the game for the Aggies and allowed five goals. Both goalies finished the day with two saves apiece.

Tech remains at home this week, hosting American on Wednesday, March 7 at 1 p.m. at Thompson Field.
