BLACKSBURG, Va. – After leading for the entire first half, the Virginia Tech lacrosse team was outlasted by William & Mary, 9-6, at Thompson Field Saturday afternoon. The loss was Tech’s first of the season as it falls to 2-1, while the victory for the Tribe was its first of the year as it now sits at 1-3 on the season.

Senior Jessica Nonn and freshman Jack Boissonneault lead the offense with two goals apiece, while William & Mary was led by Maggie Anderson, who buried three goals on the afternoon.

Tech was on the board first as Nonn was the first to score, just over five minutes into the game. William & Mary evened things up at one apiece nearly five minutes later when Anderson put her first of the day away.

Senior Morgan Widlake found the back of the goal, minutes later on a pass from junior Julia Heaps after a Tribe turnover. Freshman sensation Megan Will gave the Hokies a 3-1 lead not long after and forced a William & Mary timeout when she put away her only goal of the day.

The Hokies tacked on one more goal before the half, but entered the break at risk of losing their momentum as William & Mary buried two more goals, making it 4-3, in the final six minutes of the first half.

William & Mary picked up right where they left off in the second half as Anderson buried her third and final goal of the day, on a pass from Kaleigh Noon, who also helped on the next Tribe goal, six minutes later, to give the team its first lead of the afternoon.

A Tech timeout was called after another goal put William & Mary up 6-4, and the Hokies responded immediately as Nonn put away a pass from senior Ryan Rotanz.

Boissonneault added one more score for the Hokies, but the damage had been done. William & Mary remained in control of the game and the outcome, again dominating the final six minutes of the half to this time secure the victory.

Lucy Ferguson was instrumental in the William & Mary victory as she played the full 60 minutes in goal and denied all four of Tech’s free position attempts en route to a 10-save outing. Junior Alex Gale was in cage for the Hokies and also did not allow a free position goal in four attempts, finishing the afternoon with six saves.

Tech will hit the road for the first time this season as it travels to James Madison on Wednesday, Feb. 29 for a 4 p.m. game against the Dukes.
