Hokies announce captains and fall schedule
Bone, Carpenter, Nonn and Wolfinger to lead squad

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team and head coach Megan Burker have announced the release of the fall schedule, as well as this year’s team captains. Redshirt-senior Liz Carpenter has been chosen to lead the squad for the second straight season after being forced to lead from the sideline in 2010 due to injury. Carpenter will be joined by seniors Shannon Bone, Jessica Nonn and Julie Wolfinger as the team captains for the 2012 season.

Carpenter was named team MVP at the end of the 2010 season, despite suffering a knee injury towards the end of the season. She tallied 10 goals through the 13 starts she made, as well as 19 ground balls and 10 draw controls from the midfield. Also at midfield, Nonn returns for her senior season and has never missed a start in her three-year career. She will enter her final season holding the second spot in Tech’s all-time record books with 82 caused turnovers and is also third with 131 ground balls.

Bone and Wolfinger will lead from the defensive side of the field as Wolfinger received the team’s Coaches’ Award last season after tallying 24 ground balls and six caused turnovers in her third year as a starter. Bone has been a utility player for the Hokies over her three-year career and though she spent time battling an injury last season, she still finished the season with 23 ground balls, 15 draw controls and 12 caused turnovers in her second year as a starter.

The quartet will make its on-field debut this weekend as the Hokies kick off fall play at Johns Hopkins in an all-day event on Saturday. Less than a week later Tech will put on its only home event of the offseason as it holds the Maroon and Orange game on Thursday Oct. 6 at 4 p.m.

The Hokies will follow the intra-squad outing with a trip to Richmond on Saturday, Oct. 15 to take on the Spiders at 2 p.m. Tech will head out again four days later, this time to Charlottesville to take on in-state rival Virginia. This ACC preview will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m.

Rounding out the fall season, the Hokies will travel to Duke for an all-day event on Sunday, Oct. 30.
