Emala, Nonn earn VaSID honors
Both players honored for the second time

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – For the second time in each of their careers, senior attack Allie Emala and junior midfielder Jessica Nonn were named to the 2011 VaSID University Division All-State second team Friday morning, as selected by the Virginia Sports Information Directors’ Association (VaSID).

Richmond’s Taylor Blazer received Freshman on the Year honors, while Grace Golden of William & Mary was named Player of the Year. James Madison’s Shelly Klaes-Bawcombe was honored as the state’s Coach of the Year. Virginia, the state’s only NCAA Tournament participant, led all schools with five athletes receiving accolades.

Emala wrapped up her Tech career as the school’s all-time leader in draw controls after tallying 248 through her career. The four-year starter led the team in scoring (43), points (53) and draw controls (60) in 2011. Emala ended her final season in the midst of a 22-game scoring streak that dated back to her junior year. The Baltimore, Md., native added to her collection of postseason accolades as she was previously named to the All-ACC squad, All-ACC academic team for the fourth time in her career and honored as a third team All-American by Synapsesports.com.

Nonn also helped pace the Hokie offense in 2011 while assisting the defense as well. The Catonsville, Md., native was second only to Emala in scoring (38) and points (50). Nonn’s 24 caused turnovers was a team best last season, while she also picked up 34 ground balls, good for second on the squad en route to helping the Hokies put together their first winning season in 11 years.
