Moseley Field - 106 Box Score

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team came up with a key, 12-9 victory over the Longwood Lancers on Tuesday evening at Moseley Field. The game was moved to the alternate turf field due to weather and the condition of Tech’s usual venue, Thompson Field. Junior Ryan Rotanz led the charge for the Hokies with four goals, while Amanda Bereznay paced the Lancers with three scores.

The win over Longwood (8-6) guarantees the Hokies will finish the 2011 season with a winning record, as they moved to 10-6 today and have just one regular season game remaining before the ACC Tournament. This is the fifth time in program history and the first time since 2000 that this has been accomplished.

After a slow start, Rotanz got things going for the Hokies when she buried her first goal of the day seven minutes into the game following a pass from junior Jessica Nonn.

Longwood’s Cara O’Brien evened things at one apiece just a few minutes later, but the tie did not sit well with Rotanz. She put away two consecutive goals in less than 20 seconds, the first coming off a pass from senior Caitlyn Wier and the second on her own.

Sophomore Julia Heaps tacked on another goal for the Hokies to make it a 4-1 game with ten minutes to go in the first half. Both teams would add two more scores to their totals before the intermission. Tech went into the break with a 6-3 lead and an 18-12 shooting edge.

The Lancers were the first to strike in the second half, but the Hokies responded with two quick goals from Wier and senior Allie Emala.

With 19 minutes remaining in the game Rotanz put in her fourth and final goal of the day before Longwood’s Bereznay buried two goals in four minutes to make it a two-goal, 9-7, game.

The Hokies called a timeout following the second goal and responded immediately after the regrouping. Emala sparked a three-goal run less than a minute out of the timeout when she found the back of the goal on a pass from Heaps. After a good free position attempt from junior Morgan Widlake, Emala and Heaps teamed up again to cap-off the stint.

Though Longwood went on to score the final two goals of the game, neither team put away a shot in the last five minutes and the Hokies were able to move the ball around the field and run enough time off the clock to hold on for the win.

Sophomore Alex Gale tallied her sixth double-digit saves game of the season as she finished the day with 12, while Longwood’s Juli Liebig made seven saves in the game.

The Hokies will cap off the regular season on Saturday, April 16. They will return to Thompson Field to host No. 1 Maryland on Senior Day at Noon.
