Osborne Stadium - 108 Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Claiming its largest margin of victory this season the Virginia Tech lacrosse team claimed an 18-2 victory over the Liberty Flames at Osborne Stadium on the Liberty campus. The Hokies saw seven players score two goals and 12 players earn a point in a truly well-rounded, team effort. Seniors Allie Emala and Cailtyn Wier led Tech with five points apiece.

Tech (8-4) came out aggressive from the first draw, scoring two of its first five goals off of Liberty (4-4) turnovers. Emala started things off for the Hokies on a pass from Wier just over 30 seconds into the game.

Less than a minute later junior Ryan Rotanz put away her first goal of the day after the Flames turned it over and junior Morgan Widlake brought it back nearly the length of the field before dishing it to Rotanz.

Liberty’s Karis Walborn finally got her team on the board with 17 minutes remaining in the half to make it 5-1, Hokies.

Tech responded with two more scores, including an off-balance shot from Wier as she leaped to flick in a pass from sophomore Julia Heaps, who was behind the goal, before the Flames were forced to call a timeout.

After a slight lull in scoring junior Jessica Nonn brought Tech back to life when she scored back-to-back goals, 14 seconds apart, on the same play. First was a pass from Emala from behind the goal and the second was relayed by Wier.

The Hokies took an 11-1 lead into the intermission, but it was the Flames that came out with a vengeance in the second half, scoring their second goal of the game 33 seconds into the new period.

Using a much different lineup than the one that started the game, Tech broke back into the 10-goal differential with just under 22 minutes remaining in the game when senior Dylan Garner buried a shot from the left side.

The Hokies tacked on two more scores in a two-minute span when Wier scored on a pass from Emala, and later returned the favor to Emala on the same type of play.

The freshmen class went to work with under 12 minutes to go in the game as Kelly Naslonski buried two goals and Becca Niles and Lindsay Roche each put away their first career goals. Morgan Toland also picked up her first career point during the run as she assisted Naslonski’s second score.

The Hokies were able to get all 27 active players on the roster into the game as they outshot the Flames 30-7 and scooped up 22 ground balls, compared to their five.

Sophomore Alex Gale got the start, but was relieved midway through the first half by classmate Alexis Carey, who was also replaced later in the game by Katelyn Luker. The trio combined for two saves in the limited action they saw. In cage for the Flames was Kristen Masullo. She finished the day with 10 saves.

The Hokies will return to action Friday, April 1 as they host No. 4 North Carolina. The game will begin at 4 p.m.
