Hokies Preseason: Day 4 Recap
'
'
Our last double session of the training camp! We got a couple of solid practices in- while attack learned all of the plays, the defenders practiced our "vocab" on the field and Mallory Poole even handed us our a vocab sheet so we were all on the same page.
A few of us took a nice cold tub in the pool since it is still winter. The pool was probably colder than our actual cold tub at school. No complaints because I think it helped our soreness!

We did a team Polar Plunge and everyone ran into the ocean (some longer than others).

The Hokies did a polar bear plunge into the chilly Atlantic Ocean today #WildDunes #brrrr #VTlax #PolarBearPlunge

Also the night of Day 4, we had a team taco dinner at Meg Bartley's condo and each condo had to make something to bring!

We, as a team, came up with a mission statement that we will carry on throughout the season...
"A Virginia Tech lacrosse player makes an impact through grit, fearlessness, humility, and contagious, positive energy derived from her commitment to having fun with teammates."

This statement really says a lot about our team and our seniors put a lot of time and effort trying to create this along with the rest of our team.

The coaches then had a surprise for us and it was a nice camp fire with s'mores!!

Hokies Preseason: Day 3 Recap

We had our first double session of the week and we started off with the 110 run test. After that, we got right to work! We all had to make our own lunches that day and that was a sight to see in the house ... Back to the high school days.

After the second session, we were able to go back and rest for the rest of the day, which is what we all needed after the two run tests and the double session. This allowed us to get ready for Day 4.

Hokies Preseason Blog: Day 2
We had our first 300 yard run test and then we got right to work with practicing. After a solid two hour practice in the books, we went as a team and walked around downtown charleston and did what girls did best ... Shop 😊
That night we had another session with our sports psychologist, Anne, and did more of a one on one session. These sessions really helped us to grow as a team and learn more about each other.

Hokies Preseason: Squad going up (down) on a Tuesday
Again, we started our journey around 8 am as we all loaded up the bus to head further south. We stopped at the original Cabo Fish Taco around 11 a.m. and had a delicious lunch! Then of course our next stop was grocery shopping with the team... we ended up spending $1,700 on groceries!

The first thing everyone did when we got to the condos was take a trip to the beach. Then we had a team psychology meeting with Anne and talked about our more embarrassing moments and our proudest moments we've had in our life, there were some laughs and some tears!

More to come tomorrow...

Hokies Preseason: Returning to Tech

Follow along as redshirt freshman Haley Lukefahr documents the Hokies' annual training trip to Charleston, South Carolina and Tech begins the 2015 season.

Freshman Carly Primo and I started our journey back to Virginia Tech from my hometown of Corning, New York, at 7:07 am Monday morning. We got to Blacksburg around 3pm. The gas prices went form $2.65 to $1.95 within the eight-hour drive. I think it's safe to say we are happy to be back, even though the stay will be short since we leave bright and early for Charleston tomorrow.

Ecuador Update: Wrapping up the trip

The final portion of our expedition through Ecuador was through the country side of the Andes. As we unload from our two hour bus ride, we were greeted by a group of wild but friendly dogs and the warm smell of the campfire. Our cabin-like hostel was hand built by a husband and wife who have dedicated their lives to hosting mountain climbers and other travelers who have strayed away from the more conventional touristy areas of Ecuador. The colorful hand crafted decor of this cozy lodge was so charming and the view of the sunset from the front porch was remarkable. While we sipped the traditional tea of the area - consumed to avoid mountain sickness - we were entertained by a local music group who played some traditional music of the Andes for us. Before long, we had all downed our drinks and were dancing in the center of the room, our bodies moved out of rhythm with the foreign sounds and I'm sure we looked like nothing less than monkeys to the locals, yet we danced on into the night until the band stopped playing!
The next few days were spent hiking up the side of the Chimborazo volcano, visiting a very spiritual bee farm, hanging out with llamas, learning about the amazing Iceman and many of the indigenous traditions. On our final day we explored some of the food and craft markets to spend what little money we had saved on souvenirs in hopes to preserve and share some of the culture we had experienced during the past two weeks.
I am so greatful I had the opportunity to participate in this program abroad and I would like to thank everyone who supported me and helped make this trip possible. This course has broadened my developing global perspective of the environment and cultures through first hand experience. Ecuador is an enchanted place full of life and diversity that no words can describe, I feel like I have only scratched the surface, I want to go back.

Ecuador Update: Exploring the depths of the Amazon

Somewhat still depressed we weren't in the Galapagos anymore. We packed up our things in hopes that the following days would be as amazing as the last. Bright and early we hit the road, air, and water to travel deep into the heart of the Amazonian Rainforest. Our journey consisted of a 45 min bus ride, 3 hour delay in the airport, 30 min flight, 5 min taxi, 1 hour boat ride, 1 hour ride on a safari truck, and another 2 hour boat ride to reach the Tiputini Biodiversity Station.

This isolated oasis, home to many large and small secretive creatures, became my home away from home for the past four days. Each day, we woke up with the rising sun, enjoyed a cup of rich Ecuadorean coffee with breakfast and headed out for the trails that led us into the mystical depths of the rainforest. We divided into groups and were led by guides native to the Amazon forest.

Their ability to read the signs of the biomass on the forest floor left behind by animals and insects was incredible. We would never have found the pocket-sized monkeys meandering, hidden on the mossy branches of the 300 year old trees, the insects or butterfly bushes, the medicinal remedies and poisonous plants (always the prettiest ones!). I would have never found the lemon ant nest for a quick zesty treat and I probably would have injured myself stepping on the nest of some angry Congo ants! I wouldn't have seen a torture tree, had my hair brushed with a monkey comb or fallen in love with the rainforest without my amazing guide.

Between the early morning hikes, where we climbed so high we could could see where the canopy of trees kissed the horizon, and the late night walks through the black forest filled with red curious eyes, we ate the most amazing traditional Ecuadorean meals. On our last day we floated down the Tiputini river with electric eels, Puranas and caiman. The only thing missing from this experience was Tarzan swinging through the trees by vine!

It is a shame that this place will most likely be destroyed by the oil exploration that will be used to fulfill our materialistic needs valued highly by society. Though the creatures and vegetation have evolved to protect themselves and survive in the rainforest, their abilities will fall short in the face of chainsaws and bulldozers. I am sad to leave knowing I may never get to experience it again!

Ecuador Update: The Galapagos

The first destination of this crazy adventure began in the Galápagos Islands and is where we spent the past four nights. This place is a small oasis full of biodiversity and has maintained an affectionate culture that revolves around the nature and wildlife of the islands. I admire how well humans and animals live in harmony and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to experience this lifestyle first hand.

San Cristobal is one of the oldest islands and is where an extension of USFQ is located along with a science research center where the students are able to take part in research related to environmental issues that directly affect the islands. Here, we observed sea lions, land iguanas and a ton of different species of birds. We took a boat to travel along the coast of the island to see the location where Charles Darwin did most of his research of evolution with the finches. We snorkeled with sea lions and tropical fish before departing to Floreana.

On this second island, we hiked through the lush forest to see giant land tortoises, pirate caves and where the first inhabitants of the mystical island lived. We snorkeled with sea turtles on the black beach before returning to our final destination in the Galapagos, Santa Cruz.

We spent the morning in lecture, toured the Charles Darwin research facilities where turtles are bred in attempt to recover the nearly extinct population of land tortoises. We spent some time at the beach exploring the mangrove forests and observing juvenile hammerhead and blackfin Sharks. We rung in the new year on the pier with fireworks! Tomorrow we will be traveling to the Amazon, definitely the most exciting way to start off the new year!

Pre departure: Jack's first check-in
Wasting time sitting on couch in attempt to recover from too many holiday meals is not an option for me today because in a few hours I will board my long awaited flight to Ecuador. Today is December 26th; a day that is typically dedicated to relaxation and spending time with family and friends, however, the opportunity to travel throughout the Galápagos Islands, the Amazon and Riobamba seemed like an invaluable trade off. While I rush to stuff a few last-minute items into my pack, I can't help but imagine what incredible experiences lie ahead. This wintermester course is designed to help students explore the diversity of the islands and identify some of the negative influences of humans on the many ecosystems. I am thrilled to be part of this program and look forward to developing my global perspective through first hand experience.

Adios!

Senior Jack Boissonneault is doing something a litle different this winter break. She will spend Dec. 27- Jan. 11 in Ecuador for a winter semester class that will travel all over the South American country and the Galapagos. The environmental studies major will call San Cristobal Island home for the beginning of the trip while the class tours locally as well as around the Galapagos and to the Charles Darwin Research Center. The group will travel to the Amazon and Tiputini, and also Quito and Riobama. Check back for updates from the senior on her winter travels.
