The famed Virginia Tech Lunch Pail has come to symbolize the blue-

collar approach of the Hokies’ defense under longtime defensive

coordinate Bud Foster.

In 1995, Foster served as co-defensive coordinator with Rod Sharpless,

whose mother-in-law found the original Lunch Pail in Mercerville, New

Jersey. The pail once belonged to a coal miner and after a record-setting

defensive season, the Lunch Pail became an iconic part of Hokies’ lore.

The Pail travels wherever the Hokies go and its care is only entrusted to

a defensive leader.

Before the start of every season, a signed mission statement from the

defense is placed in The Pail. Then every week, unit goals, team goals

and keys to success are placed in The Pail, plus the turf from any road

victories.

Since 2007, The Pail has also contained the names of the 32 fallen

Hokies taken in the April 16 tragedy.

Corey Moore – whose jersey No. 56 is retired by Tech – is the only

player who has ever earned lifetime possession of an incarnation of The

Pail from Foster.
