The 2016 schedule highlights three home meets

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s and women’s cross country teams revealed today the 2016 fall schedule, highlighted by three home invitationals at the Buford Meredith Cross Country Course in Blacksburg.

The Hokies open the season with back-to-back home meets for the second year in a row. The first Hokie Invite takes place on Friday, Sept. 2, followed by the VT Alumni Invite on Friday, Sept. 16.

Tech will then travel to three different states throughout the month of October before returning home for its third and final home meet. First, the Hokies swing through Louisville, Kentucky, for the Greater Louisville Classic, followed by the Penn State National Open in State College, Pennsylvania, on Friday, Oct. 14.

Tech will close the month of October with the ACC Championship set for Friday, Oct. 28, at Wake Med Park in Cary, North Carolina. The men’s team placed fourth at the 2015 ACC Cross Country Championship, while the women’s squad finished in eighth place. Alum Thomas Curtin became the second cross country runner in Tech history to win an ACC Championship, outlasting a 134-runner field in Tallahassee, Florida.

The Hokies return home for their final home meet of the season on Friday, Nov. 4.

Tech will then cap the regular season with the NCAA Southeast Regional on Friday, Nov. 11, in Charlottesville, Virginia, with hopes of an at-large berth to the NCAA Championships. Both teams finished in sixth place at the 2015 NCAA Southeast Regional, while Curtin marked his third straight win of the year by nearly four seconds ahead of the runner-up.

For those who qualify, the 2016 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships will be held on Saturday, Nov. 19, in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Last season, the men’s squad made its sixth NCAA appearance and placed 27th out of 31 teams in Louisville, Kentucky. Individually, Curtin finished the 10k course with a time of 30:15.1, finishing in 22nd place.
