BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s cross country team made its first appearance in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national poll on Tuesday, checking in at No. 18 nationally.
The ranking is just one spot short of the Hokies’ all-time best showing in this poll dating back to 1995.
The ranking comes on the heels of the Hokies’ performance this past Saturday at the NCAA Pre-National meet held in Louisville, Kentucky. Tech finished sixth as a team, and fifth-year senior Thomas Curtin won the event, beating two-time defending national champion Edward Cheserek of Oregon by more than four seconds.
Tech, which had been receiving votes since the original 2015 poll was announced, is one of four ACC men’s teams ranked nationally. Syracuse is ranked No. 2 nationally, followed by Virginia (No. 7), and NC State (No. 12). Florida State is receiving votes.
The USTFCCCA also released its latest regional rankings of the fall, and the Hokies moved up a spot to fourth in the Southeast Region behind Virginia, Furman and NC State.
On the women’s side, the Hokies are ranked sixth in the Southeast Region behind Virginia, NC State, William and Mary, Eastern Kentucky and North Carolina. Tech finished 25th as a team at the NCAA Pre-National meet.
Tech is now preparing for the ACC Championships, which will be held Oct. 30 in Tallahassee, Florida. The first race begins at 9 a.m.
