BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech finished 37^th in the Learfield Sports Director’s Cup competition, as announced Friday by the National Association of Directors of Athletics (NACDA).

The finish marked Tech’s third-best Cup finish ever. The Hokies finished 35^th in 2012 and 36^th last year. Tech has finished in the top 40 four times in the past five years.

With 1,482 points, Stanford won the Cup. Florida finished in second place with 1,216 points, followed by Notre Dame, Virginia and Penn State.

The Hokies scored 587.50 points, registering points in the sports of men’s and women’s cross country, football, women’s soccer, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, wrestling, golf, softball and men’s tennis.

The bulk of the Hokies’ point total came from the women’s soccer and wrestling programs. The Tech women’s soccer team advanced to the College Cup for the first time ever and the Hokies’ wrestling squad finished eighth nationally.

The Hokies finished seventh among ACC schools behind Notre Dame, Virginia, Duke, Florida State, North Carolina and Maryland.

There are four Learfield Sports Directors' Cup awards, one to honor the institution with the best overall athletics program in each of the NCAA's Divisions I, II and III, and the NAIA. The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between NACDA and USA Today.
