BLACKSBURG – Officials within the university administration at Virginia Tech and within the athletics department have renamed a portion of Cassell Coliseum devoted to training and locker rooms for multiple teams in recognition of generous support from the Street family.

The renamed area includes a new Olympic sports weight room and renovated locker rooms, and is now known as the W.A. and Mae Street Olympic Sports Complex. The Street family contributed $1.6 million toward this project. Family members include Nicholas Street and his wife Fay Street of Bristol, Va.; H.A. Street of Bonita Springs, Fla.; Gaynell Fowler of Grundy, Va.; and Dr. Russell Street of Anderson, S.C.

“This project appealed to us because we realized how much it would enhance the experience of so many of Virginia Tech’s student athletes,” said Nicholas Street, an attorney who earned his bachelor’s of general business in 1953 from what is now Virginia Tech’s Pamplin College of Business., in a university release. “Great facilities and the university’s excellent academics are a winning combination when it comes to attracting talent for all our sports programs.”

The new Olympic Sports Athletic Performance Center, which sits in a spot that formerly served as an auxiliary gym in Cassell Coliseum, features more than 6,000 square feet filled with new weights, barbells, weight racks and other assorted equipment designed to help one get stronger, bigger and faster. The new center also features an 1,800 square-foot mezzanine level designed with equipment to help enhance the functional movement of Tech’s athletes and thus prevent injuries.

Other spaces that were substantially improved include the locker rooms for the baseball team, the softball team, the women’s lacrosse team, and the soccer and track-and-field teams for both genders.

The Street siblings said their parents placed a strong emphasis on accomplishment and education. Members of the family have made many donations to educational institutions, but this is the first facility within one of those institutions to be named for their parents.
