NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Virginia Tech men's cross country team was one of 145 Division I institutions to be named as an All-Academic team for the 2012 cross country season by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Monday.

To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, a team must have a cumulative GPA higher than a 3.00 and have started at least five student-athletes at their respective NCAA regional championship. Tech’s squad earned a cumulative GPA of 3.02. The Hokies were one of seven ACC schools that made the grade.

During the fall of 2012, Tech made its first trip to the NCAA Championships since 1987 where the team placed 22nd. Redshirt-senior Will Mulherin tied for 28th individually to become the only male athlete in in the cross country program's history to become a two-time All-American. Mulherin also became the first ACC champion in program history as he led his squad the men's first-ever ACC team title. Sophomores Brayden Burleigh and Thomas Curtin each earned All-ACC honors along with Mulherin. The team also finished fourth at the Southeast Regional where Mulherin and Michael Hammond each claimed All-Region honors for the second year in a row.
