NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Virginia Tech men’s cross country team moved up one spot into a tie for fifth, while the women are ranked eighth in the latest Southeast regional rankings, as announced by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) today. This is the final regional poll prior to the eight NCAA regional meets across the nation on Nov. 12.

The Hokie men placed tied for fourth and the women finished eighth at Satuday’s Atlantic Coast Conference Championships hosted by Clemson at Musser Farms. Tech’s men scored 116 points to finish in a tie with Duke for fourth place in the team race. Tech is tied again with Duke in this week’s regional rankings.

The men’s fourth place team finish was their second highest since joining the ACC in 2004, eclipsed only in 2008 when they finished third. The women had 180 points to place eighth.

For the men, redshirt junior Will Mulherin finished seventh overall to earn his second career All-ACC honor while fellow redshirt junior Michael Hammond was 10th to earn his first career all-conference honor in cross country. Mulherin was tabbed as the Virginia Tech Athletics Hardee’s Star of the Week for his performance. Sophomore Taylor Crosson crossed the line first for the Virginia Tech women as she was 26th overall.

NC State stayed atop the men’s Southeast region, while the Wolfpack also moved into the top spot on the women’s side.

Tech is back in action on Friday, Nov. 4 as it hosts the Hokie Open on the Tech Cross Country Course. Races begin at 4:30 p.m. It will be the Hokies final tune-up prior to the NCAA Southeast Regional Meet on Saturday, Nov. 12 in Louisville, Ky.
