STUDY ABROAD CLASS TO AFR I CA
Both Vinny Mihota and Yosuah Nijman were members of the Virginia Tech
contingent of 12 students and four faculty members who traveled to Rwanda for
roughly 14 days in May. The official designation of the course was UAP 3984:
Sport Policy and Society. What Mihota, Nijman and the Hokies experienced was
an immersive study abroad course that explored different sectors of international
development and how sports can support such development. The course offered
authentic and real-world engagement with multiple organizations, providing students
the opportunity for personal reflection and transformative learning. This course has
traveled to the Dominican Republic and Switzerland over the last five years.
While immersed in the Rwandan culture, the students learned in a classroom
setting and also visited multiple organizations and destinations, including: the
Rwanda National Olympic Committee, Grassroots Soccer, the Ministry of Culture
and Sport, Kigali International Community School (KICS), the Kigali Genocide
Memorial, Akagera National Park and Rwanda Youth Clubs for Peace.
